Brushed gloss, done the old way, on the woodwork you touch every day.

Doors, built-ins and trim are where a finish gets seen up close and handled daily. They are also where Mitch's work has gone furthest. He is a Fine Paints of Europe certified painter and brushes their Hollandlac, a Dutch alkyd enamel that levels into a deep, hard gloss, along with their water-based Eco line.

The gloss is only as good as what is under it. In Mitch's words: "There's insane levels to gloss & in my opinion it's all what lies beneath the paint." That means oil or universal primers, sanding between coats, and brushes built for these coatings.

Wood doors get the same care. A freshly installed mahogany entry door was stained a custom color and finished in place with more than six coats of Marine Yacht Varnish, weather strip and all.

What is Hollandlac?

Hollandlac is Fine Paints of Europe's alkyd enamel, made in Holland. Brushed correctly over the right primer, it levels out into a deep, durable gloss that is hard to get with standard trim paint.

Can you refinish a door without taking it off?

Often, yes. The mahogany entry door on this page was stained and varnished in place, with the weather strip already installed.
